Japanese composer Ryuichi Sakamoto sadly passed away on March 28. Cancer beat him while he was only 71 years old. In his career, he has written some stunning music, including the music for the movies The Revenant, The Last Emperor and Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, which all won him many awards. Without me knowing, he was a significant influence on my love for film music when I was just a child: I had been listening to his theme for Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence on a cassette tape a lot before I even knew the concept of a soundtrack.
